Montreuil, France. Project: The internal restructuring of a 1950s house of 90m2 accessed at first floor, with a garage and rear garden, to create a 150m2 family home on three levels incorporating a photographer’s studio. Brief: An open plan living space for both family life and entertaining, including a strong liaison with the garden as a ‘room’, two bedrooms, a guest space, an open fire place, a main stair made in steel, an all comprehensive but discreet kitchen, abundant book shelving, ample surface for the display of an ever evolving eclectic collection of art and ‘objects’. Response: A new glazed street façade provided a ground floor entrance to the house; a first floor internal ‘garden’ replaced the external stair, and a large opening was created through to the ground floor which was in turn opened into a single volume, whilst preserving the garage entrance for bicycles. A steel stair was designed and installed leading to an open double height library and gallery space serving the office, bedrooms and bathroom. A second stair leads to a mezzanine level in the acquired attic, providing a piano, tv, and guest space, with access to extensive storage. The volume is open and fluid between each of the levels, made living, as much by the design, as by the living occupation of the clients and their ultra-usage of every corner. <img width="1062" Montreuil, France. Project: The partial demolition, restructuring, reroofing, and extending of a 1950s, 74m2 three storey house, with a street level ‘cellar’ and a raised ground floor, to create a 145m2 family home on four levels, with a garden roof terrace. Brief: To provide a complete liaison between house and garden, a family room with a wood burning stove, a kitchen and dining space as the heart of the home, with a table to seat up to twenty people, a yoga space, an artist’s studio, an office, two bedrooms, a family bathroom, and a guest space. To re-use and incorporate into the project design, the materials recuperated from the demolition. Response: To create a dance of space and materials in which to live, perform, and play. A plan and section of multiple games and movement, perspectives and surprise, as much an art piece in itself as it is a home, the recuperated materials were used to a maximum, generating the evolution and enrichment of the design, the terracotta roof tiles were used as ‘bricks’ to form a central structural ‘ruin’, roof timbers were used to form bridges, staircase and walls. The cellar became a guest studio, the new main entrance leads in three directions, the glazed wall to the garden can hide invisibly forming one plateau of the principal space to the terrace to the rising garden. A great laminated beam traverses the space to pierce the outside wall, the cedar-board, cladding the exterior of the timber structure, also covers the surfaces of the ‘cube’ room suspended indoors - the main bedroom with double height space, glazed boxes piercing walls to frame views, a staircase and mezzanine leading to the artist’s studio and secret garden roof terrace, in turn liaising with the mezzanine of the second bedroom, privacy and treetops views to Paris beyond. <img width="1946" height="1824" width_o="1946" height_o="1824" Chandolin, Switzerland. Project: The design and construction of a wooden chalet on a steep, field site, on the edge of a mountain village with stringent design rules governing plan proportion, elevational treatment, and roof form. Brief: A chalet for both family use and for seasonal letting, a kitchen for more than one user, dining for up to twelve, social seating, with a separate social area for children, tv, or extended sleeping, two bedrooms, and a plan designed for the expected future extension of the chalet. Response: The proximity to the tree line and the steep slope of the mountainside lead the design of plan and section. The concrete lower floor cut deep into the slope, and housed the bedrooms, bathroom and services. The last of the descending 132 steps arrived at the main entrance to the chalet at its raised ground floor, the boot room opening on to the principal space with expansive windows opening onto the high body of the pines meters away, pines that when illuminated brightly at night, laden with snow, provided the reflected shadow of their light to the interior, to be greeted by the flames of the stove. This double height space, open to the roof, is overlooked by a deep mezzanine with broad lounge seating and a glass balustrade to below. All is wood, simple and clean, cut branches are details, a heated tile floor with thrown rugs and cushioned seating, the carcass of a tormented fallen tree, carried upon my back from higher in the mountain, decorates the high wall. The mountains and the stark light are all exposure; the close pines and the cedar cradle of the interior are all embrace. Work to include the lowering the level of the cellar floor, a new insulated ground floor slab, rebuilding the single storey kitchen extension, retiling the roof, replacing windows, electrics, and plumbing, and opening for use, two ground floor fireplaces. Brief: After main reconstruction work; to create a contemporary interior and garden, including two fire places in the dining room and the lounge, a kitchen, bathroom, two first floor bedrooms and an attic bedroom. Response: Reconstruction of the entrance corridor wall to close the lounge doorway, leaving only a gap as a visual link, and providing a corridor niche for a given painting, and shelving on the reverse side for the lounge. A new through passage was opened from dining room to lounge. Two fireplaces were created in formed concrete; in the lounge with a log store and platform, and in the dining room, at table level, to be used as a barbeque. Entire demolition of existing bathroom, including the raised floor slab, the corridor wall, restoration of the ceilings and roof light surround, the complete renewal of plumbing, drainage, and electrical services, design, construction and finishing of the new bathroom, plus the refurbishment of the adjacent corridor. Brief: To reuse the existing cast iron bathtub, preserve the existing broken-mosaic wall created by the client, provide a separate floor level shower, washbasin, wc, washing machine, associated necessary storage, space heater, and warm to the touch non rainforest flooring, all in a limiting volume of constrained headroom. Response: The chosen aesthetic dictated and inspired by the existing mosaic of the client is extended more formally with further mosaic and a complimentary larger format tiled counterpoint, E A U provides a centre line, the double round-end of the bath, the curve of the concrete mansard, and the need to move un-aggressed upon a tiny floor, provides the curve that orientates the plan and the detail. The theme of kelp adrift in the suspension of water, generates the decoration of the shower enclosure. The white of the wall and the colours of the tiles with the abundant daylight from above, place you outdoors. Brief: To create a bench and library in keeping with a double height attic space apartment, of exposed ancient roof structure juxtaposed with a white walled open plan modular interior. Response: To acquire ancient timber of similar character to the roof structure to form with robust simplicity the long body of the bench, and to draw the nature of the roof structure to the lower level of the floor, whilst embracing all of the wall between. This wall, with services that caused a faceted relief, was faced to form a single surface, concurrently providing the cinema screen, and meeting cleanly the obtuse angle of the wall of the bathroom module. Barbès, Paris. Project: Restoration and renovation of 46m2 of existing traditional oak parquet. Brief: &nbsp;To structurally restore the herring bone parquet of the main salon and the parallel parquet of the entry, corridor and two bedrooms. To sand and renovate the flooring and apply finishes. Response: The parquet had shrunk and shifted during its 100 year life. Some areas were no longer fully supported by the floor lathes beneath the parquet. These areas were removed and re-laid with additional support. Some of the bedroom parquet and all of the corridor parquet had been significantly damaged and poorly re-laid after the installation of electrical conduits beneath these floors. Salvageable parquet boards were taken from the corridor to restore the bedroom floors. All of the supporting lathes in the entry and the corridor needed to be re-seated on new plaster plinths, properly incorporating the conduits; this was then followed by an entirely new parquet floor being fitted. All other minor repairs to the existing parquet were done, all joints scrapped and cleaned. Les invalides, Paris. Project: Kitchen of 11m2. Entire demolition of kitchen and dining structure, complete renewal of all services, design and installation of a new kitchen and construction of a dining area with integral storage. Brief: Clean, bright, spacious, functional, tiled surfaces, a ceramic sink, the incorporation of a particular chandelier, and planting beyond the window.
