INTERIOR SPACE - PORTFOLIO
concept+design+realisation

A sofa library, a cosy corner for reading and cinema.
Canal St Martin, Paris.

Project: To remove 8m2 of full wall storage cupboards and create a lounging bench with integral storage, book shelving, and cinema projection screen.

Brief: To create a bench and library in keeping with a double height attic space apartment, of exposed ancient roof structure juxtaposed with a white walled open plan modular interior.

Response: To acquire ancient timber of similar character to the roof structure to form with robust simplicity the long body of the bench, and to draw the nature of the roof structure to the lower level of the floor, whilst embracing all of the wall between. This wall, with services that caused a faceted relief, was faced to form a single surface, concurrently providing the cinema screen, and meeting cleanly the obtuse angle of the wall of the bathroom module. Upon this bathroom wall an end return was created to abut the shelves of the small library it enclosed, and to the other end of the bench, a raised ‘bookend’ was friend to elbow, object and adjacent chimneybreast.
